You may have heard of Coney Island – after all, this Brooklyn neighborhood has got more attention in recent years. Coney Island is located on the beach and has an iconic amusement park. It was featured on Beyonce’s music video Xo, as well as on TV series such as Girls and Mr. Robot. I particularly love Coney Island – I think because of the memory of the first time I was there, at the beginning of Spring in 2014. It was good to see the sea after a long winter. Now, let’s check some things to do in the area!
Amusement Park
For me, what makes Coney Island a unique place is the amusement park by the beach – and also because the park has a vintage vibe, you know? I love it! Few people know but there are two amusement parks: Luna Park and Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park (which owns the famous Ferris wheel). For those who enjoy radical experiences, it is worth checking out the Cyclone, a roller coaster dating from 1927, which is one of the oldest in the USA, and also the Thunderbolt, a roller coaster with a 90-degree drop!
Remember: it is not necessary to buy tickets to walk around the park.
Beach
New York’s beaches aren’t necessarily a must-see, truth be told, but it is what it is! Jokes aside, as I said earlier, it’s the beach + amusement park set that makes Coney Island special. If you have been in Florida or California – or even beaches around the world like Italy and Brazil – you may not find the beach funny at all, but for those who live here, sometimes it is a relief to be able to see the sea, even if the beach is not the most wonderful in the world.
Boardwalk
I just love Coney Island’s boardwalk – especially at the end of the day. You can feel the sea breeze, explore the stores and eataries, having another point of view of the park…
Nathan’s
Hot dog is one of the most famous and beloved fast-food foods in the US, right? I heard that Nathan’s chain claim that they have created the hot dog. True or not, if you enjoy a hot dog, you have to stop by one of the two Nathan’s locations on Coney Island – one of them on the boardwalk. In addition to hot dogs, you will also find burgers and other food options – including seafood.
New York Aquarium

The Aquarium is home to over 500 species of marine wildlife, including 18 different kinds of sharks and ray species. Admission is free after 3:00pm on Wednesdays at the Aquarium – and you need to reserve your ticket in advance (starting on Monday, 3 pm, for that Wednesday’s reservations).
Coney Island Brewery

Visit Coney Island Brewery – open all year – and try some of their craft beers – including many varieties of Pilsners, Pale and IPA. In addition, their tap bar also features a food menu.
Coney Island Amphitheater

The Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk, the premier outdoor live entertainment venue in Brooklyn opened in July 2016 and it is a 5,000-seat covered open-air venue – the first of its kind in the Tri-State area – hosting a mix of concerts, family shows, sports, comedy, and multicultural events. How to get to Coney Island
You can use the D, N, F or Q lines to get to Coney Island. From Midtown Manhattan, the journey takes around 50 minutes.
