As I always say, New York has everything. Have you ever thought of a restaurant that serves only dessert? Yeah. In New York this exists! Spot Dessert Bar was on my list of places long ago because of that! Another day, after a lighter lunch, we finally decided to go there. After all, how can you not get mouth-watering with the desserts offered below?
Spot Dessert Bar specializes in desserts that are created to be a blend of distinctive flavors. They take Eastern and Western influences, balancing unique ingredients such as Green Tea, Kabocha, and Yuzu to create one of a kind confections. It is owned by two cousins, Chatchai “Chai” Huadwattanana and Ace Watanasuparp. They are also the owners of OBAO restaurants, blending traditional dishes from Vietnam and Thailand. Spot Dessert Bar menu has eight dessert options. The options are usually seasonal and change from time to time. But there are three options that are the signatures of the place: Matcha Lava, Golden Toast and The Harvest. The last one is served in this unusual format, it looks like a plant – but it takes a mix of ingredients like berries, cheesecake and Oreo. To check out the complete menu, click here.
We have been at the East Village location and we got there around 5:30 p.m. The place is small, there were some people waiting to sit. We gave our name and in less than 5 minutes our table was ready. As we were in the mood to try, we chose two desserts- the desserts cost $ 9.90 – and we got the two of the signatures dessert. My choice was the Matcha Lava – which I would translate as a Pettit Gateau – comes with a warm dark chocolate cake filled with green tea ganache and a scoop of green tea ice cream. I know that perhaps many of you are thinking: green tea? Believe me, the flavor mix is fantastic and the ice cream helps balance the sweetest taste of chocolate cake. Thiago chose the Golden Toast, with a toast, warm, crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, very buttery, with condensed milk ice cream, whipped cream and strawberries. A delight! I love this mix of hot and cold, you know? Both portions are super generous and neither me nor Thiago (who is a sweet addicted) could eat everything. Next time, we would order just one and share it. Remember that Spot Dessert Bar still has coffee, tea and cookies! Below, a video of the dessert I tasted, the Matcha Lava:
