There is no doubt that New York is a fashion capital. This city launches trends, it’s home to one of the most important fashion weeks in the world, home to important designers and also where are located the stores of the most famous brands in the world and where brands around the world are researching trends. And, of course, with a market like this, there are also a lot of fashion schools.
No wonder that many people who want to work in this field have the dream of studying here. There are also those who already are work in the fashion market and want to specialize – and then, why not choose the capital of the world to get more knowledge? Since 2010, Fashionista publishes an annual ranking of the world’s best fashion schools. This year, the list of 25 schools includes three schools in New York. The ranking criteria include price, alumni who are successful, in addition to student feedback telling their experiences, quality of faculty, career counseling, and financial aid options. And the three schools in New York that have appeared on the list are Parsons, FIT, and Pratt Institute. Remember that Parsons and FIT also entered the ranking of the Top 10 world’s best fashion schools in the Business of Fashion website.
As I know that the subject “study fashion in New York” causes interest in many people, I decided to use this ranking to present these schools and give a summary of what they offer. Remember that each school has its requirements and deadlines for enrollment – which can be viewed directly on the website of each. My intention here is to give a brief summary, something that, at least, helps at the beginning of the research of anyone thinking of studying fashion in New York.
Parsons, ranking third in the list – Parsons is probably the top 1 among New York fashion students. With a strong name, names like Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Tom Ford, Narciso Rodriguez, and Alexander Wang have studied there The undergraduate degree programs are Fashion DesignĀ andĀ Strategic Design and Management and graduate are Fashion Studies andĀ Fashion Design and Society. Graduate courses take about 4 semesters with an average of 2-5 disciplines per semester. Undergraduate courses last about four years. The annual tuition is – Undergraduate: $45,080. Graduate: $46,240. Students are able to not only take internships during the summers but during semesters too. Some will even intern with one brand for two or three years. Also, the school has partnered with many retailers and corporations (like LVMH) with the aim of getting student work seen and critiqued.
Parsons also offers courses throughĀ Parsons CertificateĀ Program. There are courses like Fashion Business, Fashion Design,Ā andĀ Fashion Industry Essentials. To get the certificate in one of these courses, you must take the required classes.Ā Ā More flexible and less rigorous than a standard university degree program, the Parsons Certificate Program is a part-time, non-credit course with no entrance requirements. Some students are new to art and design, others enroll in the Certificate Program to expand their skills and strengthen their portfolios. Each class fee is on average $700. Parsons also offers Summer programs,Ā that happen every year, during July,Ā Parsons Summer Intensive Studies. Whether you’re a high school student preparing to apply to college, a college student interested in enhancing your own program and earning transfer credits, or an adult investigating career options, summer courses can help you define and achieve your goals. This intensive three-week, the three-credit program is open to anyone wishing to deepen their knowledge of art and design in an academically rigorous and artistically stimulating environment. Students spend five days a week in studio classes and receive demanding homework assignments. Courses are supplemented by special events, including portfolio reviews, Parsons alumni career panels, and industry guest lecturers, all designed to prepare students for admission to design school or direct them toward relevant career paths. Fashion Institute of Technology, FIT, seventh in the ranking– also has a strong presence among the world’s fashion schools. It is relatively inexpensive to study at FIT – and the college has a great reputation in New York and around the world. Among the former students, there are names like Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, Nanette Lepore, Reem Acra, and Nina Garcia. In fashion, there are a lot of undergraduate programs: Ā Accessories Design,Ā Fabric Styling,Ā Fashion Design,Ā Fashion Business Management,Ā Illustration,Ā International Trade and Marketing for the Fashion Industries, Jewelry Design, Textile Development and MarketingĀ andĀ Textile/Surface Design. FIT also offers continuing education through the Center for Continuing and Professional Studies. There areĀ coursesĀ in several areas, through “credit” and “non-credit” certificates.Ā Credit Students are working towards either a career/technical certificate or degree program at Lane, or are taking courses that will be eligible to transfer for a program at another college or university. In some cases, students take courses that are offered for credit for personal reasons or skills updating, even if they do not need the college credit.Ā Noncredit or Community Education Students are taking courses for personal or professional interest. To get a certificate, you have to take the required courses – this number varies from 10 to 14 courses per certificate. Each course costs from $195 to $315 and you will attend them in the order you want.
Additionally, FIT also has a summer program! The ESL Fashion Business Program happens every year during the month of July and lasts three weeks. There are English classes in the morning and fashion classes – focused on the subject you have chosen – in the afternoon. Pratt Institute, eighteenth place in the ranking– located in Brooklyn (with also a campus in Manhattan), and with a post-graduate employment rate of 89%, Pratt is a great choice if you want to study fashion but would like to study other applied arts as well. And it’s one of the few design programs which offers electives in fashion editorial/magazine publishing. Among the famous alumni, there are names like Jeremy Scott, Betsey Johnson, Adam Selman, Samantha Pleet, Seokwon Andy Kim, and Wonjeong Debbie Yoon (Andy + Debb). Pratt also offers some certificates throughĀ the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. In Fashion, you can get a certificate inĀ Fashion New Media, which combines photography, graphic design, Web design, and social media marketing with a design curriculum focused on fashion brand creative.
