I love ice cream, what about you? And for me, it doesn’t matter if it’s winter or summer, I think it’s the kind of thing that goes well year-round. Here in New York, there are many cool ice cream options for you to explore. And now, living in New York City, I learned to appreciate ice creams with different textures and flavors. For example, it is very common for ice creams to have sprinkled sea salt in some options – which I particularly love! And, below, I’m showing you the ice cream shops that I consider the best in New York City!

Big Gay Ice Cream –  Big Gay Ice Cream seasonal truck debuted in June 2009 and since then the business has seen a whirlwind of publicity and has been become an NYC favorite. Mixing high-quality ingredients with guilty pleasures, traditional flavors with the unexpected, the place became famous.  The first Big Gay Ice Cream Shop opened in September 2011 in New York City’s East Village. In June 2012, Dessert Professional featured Big Gay Ice Cream in their 10 best ice cream parlors in the U.S. issue. Then in May 2013, The Daily Beast and USA Today ranked Big Gay Ice Cream as the #5 best ice cream parlor in the world – the highest-ranked U.S. ice cream parlor on the list. The Salty Pimp is a customer favorite, featuring a vanilla soft serve, dulce de leche, and a sprinkling of sea salt, all dipped into a chocolate shell. I am addicted to sweets and salty desserts, so this is the perfect ice cream cone for me. It is different from everything I’ve tried! $5 on average

Morgenstern’s Finest Ice Cream  – this ice cream shop became famous because of the black ice-cream – Coconut Ash, which has a very strong coconut flavor. I tried it – because you know, it was all over Instagram but the Salted Caramel Pretzel is much better. Here, the recipes are thought and developed for each flavor. The integrity of the ingredients is not compromised by stabilizers or additives. Also, they also have sorbet, great choices for vegans and/or lactose intolerant.

Milk Bar – it is a bakery – with cookies and cakes – but the highlight here is the ice cream, one of the most famous in the city. The classic flavors are Cereal Milk, with milk, cereal, brown sugar, and a touch of salt – and as the name suggests, it tastes just like the milk at the bottom of your cereal bowl. I don’t know how to explain how much I love this ice cream. I wish it was available in the supermarkets as well! The Owner, Christina Tosi, was featured on the Netflix TV series, Chef’s Table and you should definitely watch to understand the story behind every creation – including the ice cream.

Grom – authentic Italian gelato. Grom doesn’t use aromas or coloring agents, and nor do their suppliers. The gelato gets its taste and color exclusively from the raw materials used, depending on the season and availability. Also, this is another highlight: the menu changes every month. It is a very classic place in the city and they are also known for the hot chocolate.

Van Leeuwen Artisan Ice Cream –this Ice Cream place started in 2008 out of a buttery yellow truck on the streets of NYC. They make all their ice cream from scratch in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The Classic scoops are crafted with nothing more than fresh milk and cream, cane sugar, and egg yolks. The Vegan scoops are made with housemade cashew milk, organic coconut milk, organic extra virgin coconut oil, organic cane sugar, pure cocoa butter, and organic carob bean. There are a lot of flavors and it is delicious. I simply love the pistachio flavor – usually, the pistachio flavor is so artificial, but not this one.

il laboratorio del gelato – this place serves about 200 flavors at its location in the Lower East Side – and beyond the classic and traditional flavors to which we are used to, the place also has other, super unusual. Do you want some examples? Olive oil, sweet potato, red beans, rosemary, basil, ricotta, avocado, beet … That’s the reason of the name “laboratory”, where chefs and caterers are encouraged and welcomed to work with them to develop unique flavors for their individual menus. The place provides ice cream to restaurants in the city, who use the product in their desserts. Obviously, the offer of flavors varies according to the day and the time of year, but there is always a varied mix of ice cream and sorbet. Two flavors cost $4,25. Try the chocolate one – it tastes like a mousse!

Milk & Cream Cereal Bar – I have to tell you: Instagramable food is not always so delicious as they look like – but, fortunately, it is not the case for Milk & Cream Cereal Bar. The idea here to mix ice cream with cereal – is there any chance that it could go wrong? I don’t think so. You choose your ice cream, you cereal to mix, the color of the cone… It is $7 but trust me: share with someone, because it is huge! And it is so delicious!

Ample Hills Creamery  – this is one of the best ice creams in the city. Ample Hills Creamery was founded in the spring of 2011 by a married couple, Brian Smith and Jackie Cuscuna. Clocking in at 15,000sq ft, the Red Hook Factory is the largest ice cream production facility in New York City and besides that, the place features an interactive ice cream museum. The factory churns over 500,000 gallons of ice cream a year. The ice cream is creamy and delicious and besides the variety of flavors, they also offer an exclusive flavor called The Hook, a burnt sugar ice cream mixed with salty fudge bites and Dutch stroopwafels.
