HOW I’VE BEEN IMPROVING MY ENGLISH - some of these tips are also great for native speakers!

I started to learn English by myself when I was a kid. One of my favorite things to do was translate my favorite songs - word by word with the help of a dictionary. I also had English classes at school, which were mostly focused on Grammar.

I only enrolled in a proper English school after graduating from college. I didn’t have plans to live abroad yet, but I knew that learning English would open many doors.

Since I moved to NYC in 2014, I have taken various classes and courses that have greatly improved my confidence in speaking the language.

📕I’m grateful for the @nypl ESL program. This free program is available at various branches across the five boroughs. Check their website for more information regarding the registration process - classes are accessible to everyone regardless of immigration status.

👗The @fitnyc ESL/Fashion Certificate Program was such a cool experience. It was during my first year living here, and I was so anxious about having classes in English about a specific topic (fashion). Until that moment, my only English classes were ESL ones. I was so proud of myself.

💻 I absolutely love @italki and the fact that you can find teachers of over 150 languages. I found great teachers who helped me improve my conversation and writing skills.

📝I can’t recommend @gothamwriters classes enough. My only regret was allowing my insecurities to get in the way, which prevented me from enrolling sooner.

🗣️The Accent Coach - these classes helped me A LOT. I’ve improved my pronunciation and gained more confidence. Unfortunately, Claudette has retired - but Jay Alexander Poulton is now the new Accent Coach. You can contact him through the website www.theaccentcoach.com

⌨️ @grammarly - the best writing assistant! Grammarly saves me every time I write in English. The paid version is 10/10.

I’m a very DIY girl when it comes to beauty. I can do my nails, waxing, I can take care of my skin, putting on some basic makeup - but there are some things that you can’t just do it at home.

So, here are my top recommendations when it comes to beauty services in NYC:

🧴FACIALS

@fildstudio offers different facials - but since you are treating yourself, get the 60-minute one. And if you like extractions, Keiko is your girl here. Her hands are magical, and my skin keeps glowing for days after.

@lanyorganics - If you are looking for a relaxing experience, I highly recommend LANY Organics. Laurie Adams is so sweet. She uses products from @dralkaitis and takes a supernatural/organic approach. The environment is super cozy and relaxing.

💉BOTOX

@fildstudio - I have mixed feelings about Botox and fillers - but Botox really made a whole difference in my esteem when I did last year. The only time I got Botox here in the city was at FILD Studio as well. It was super fast, plus I liked how long it lasted.

💇‍♀️ HAIR

When it comes to hair, the people are trust the most are Brazilians - especially for color and highlights or a more “radical” hair cut.

@danidaninyc - I’ve been doing highlights with Dani for years and I absolutely love her attention to details and her professionalism. Dani is also amazing with haircuts.

Also recommend @filipibolchevi - I haven’t done highlights with him, but a friend of mine did more than once and he is really good! I got a haircut with him, and I loved his attention to detail.

💆🏼‍♀️ BODY MASSAGE

If you are looking for Lymphatic Drainage, Sculpting massage and other massages, @lizsoares is your girl. Make sure to check her page and her method.

There’s a credit card that allows you to pay your rent with it - without transaction fees - and earn point for each dollar spent on rent. These points can then be redeemed for various rewards like travel, shopping, or even a down payment on a home.

I’ve been using Bilt for over a year. It gives me extra points when I use my card for dining out, plus some other perks. It has no annual fee and doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees.

I’m currently looking for flight tickets for a trip in January, and I’ll be able to use my points to pay for two round-trip tickets.

And don’t worry about the landlord, who only accepts checks – you can set up that on Bilt. So, it doesn’t matter if it’s a bank transfer or a check, they got you covered.
